Sustainability and balanced materials were important to this client. They also wanted their updated core living space to feel warm and lived-in. They had a small outdoor storage area that they wanted to expand their living room into, as well as an empty exterior nook between two walls of the home that they wanted to be turned into an enclosed space to grow their plants.
Maple butcher block countertops, linseed-oil based marmoleum flooring, and handmade tiles are just a few of the finishes that made this project holistically healthy. We worked unique tiles into the kitchen backsplash that presented a unique challenge, being handmade and of varying thicknesses – our tile layer had to provide extra backing and custom cut the surrounding tiles to create a neat pattern all the way around the kitchen.
Design in Details
In the garage-turned-additional living space, we added a cozy sitting area with a wood stove. The warm brick hearth and classic black stove complement the wood windows and tranquil blue-green tones on the walls. We also incorporated a structural post into the kitchen countertop and created a passthrough into the living room to create that ‘open’ feeling our clients were after without having to reengineer or do major structural modifications. And in the old exterior nook, we created an atrium. What once was simply an empty exterior space is now a beautiful nook to sprout seedlings and enjoy the sunlight on a crisp winter day.
